Hill Country State Natural Area
(Bandera, TX)
The Hill Country State Natural Area,
located 11 miles outside of Bandera, Texas, is one of the prime
mountain-biking areas in South Texas. As the name implies, the terrain
varies from jeep trails to steep, single track climb and descents. The
facilities are primitive (as required by deed restrictions) but
overnight camping is available. MAKE SURE YOU BRING PLENTY OF WATER as
the sun and heat can be brutal and potable water is limited. For
further information, visit the
Hill
Country State Natural Areas web page. There
are approximately 34 miles of trail open to mountain bikers, hikers, and
horses. As always, upon encountering one of the above, yield the trail.
To get
there take Highway 16 (Bandera Road) to Bandera, Texas (approximately 45
miles from San Antonio). From Bandera, travel south on State
Highway 173, go across the Medina River and continue for approximately
1/4 mile to State Highway 1077, turn right and go 8 miles on State
Highway 1077 to end of the black top. Continue on the caliche road,
crossing 2 cattle guards to the park entrance.
